Detail / One of Other Shores of Yours

One of Other Shores of Yours consists of a wide white-line painted with chalk on the floor, crossing from one end to the another, chalk-painted timbers and thin fabric attached in between the pillars. The venue which the work installed is a gallery renovated an old traditional-style house having used for a long time and all over the surface of the room are covered with ash from the fireplace at the downstairs.

One of Other Shores of Yours was made on the occasion of a short-term artist-in-residency at mountainous area in Niigata, Japan. The installation represents an idea of boundary between nature and the inhabitants as well as the inhabitants and the visitors, which stems from the experience of Yamada’s first visit to the region.

Yamada happened to see roads blocked in winter by heavy snow fall which is characteristic in this region. Imagined the wall of snow as a traffic stop-line to divide humans and nature as well as the boundary to prevent to step in the locals’ lives, Yamada drew a huge stop line dividing the gallery in order to learn to see the other side respectfully which is not allowed to enter.
