Detail/ Give It a Name
Give It a Name was made during an artist-in-residency program for NAKANOJO biennale in Gumma, Japan. It consists of four drawings hanged from the ceiling and three hundreds of names written with chalk on the floor.
Inspired by “Katari” (folklore storytelling in Japanese traditional style) she had heard in Gumma, Yamada transformed the fearful experience of walking in the complete darkness on the way back to the accommodation located mid-mountain during the residency, referring to the way the folktales has been made; to make a story in order to overcome fear.
In Give It a Name, 300 names are enumerated on the floor, which are of animals/plants living on the way to the accommodation from the venue the work exhibited, alongside the installation of the drawings depicting the situation of the darkness. The number of the names is same with the number of steps to go back to the accommodation.
