While volunteering in disaster relief following the Noto Peninsula Earthquake, I met volunteers who had come from all over the country. Drawn to both their individuality and their ordinariness which cannot be captured simply by the word “volunteer,” I wanted to understand how they had crossed geographic and emotional distances to those affected, ultimately putting themselves in their shoes.
This project traces the routes and methods by which they reached their first disaster relief sites, based on conversations with the people I met there. By retracing their steps, I aim to walk in their shoes.
