Setting in Izu-Oshima island in Japan, Before It Happens is a work that focuses on the long period of normality before a volcanic eruption, and features disaster drills that remind us not to forget the menace completely. The evacuation captured in the video is a (staged) routine training, and the children who have completed their slightly awkward training look all the more refreshed as they hurry back to their daily live activities. The work contains images that evoke volcanic eruptions, but rather than fanning fear, these are attempts to imagine the danger in concrete images.
